Home-based Physiotherapy Treatment for Kids

Janell believes that kids are best treated in their homes where they are most comfortable. This stems from her experience providing early intervention for kids in New Zealand and Australia, where kids from birth to 3 years old are treated at home if they need physiotherapy for their condition. These young kids were happy to be treated at home, and willingly participated in therapy. Janell wants to continue this positive aspect of therapy with the kids that she sees, and so chooses to see kids at their homes.

Benefits of Home Based Physiotherapy Treatment:

  • Your kid learns new motor skills in a familiar environment. This reduces stress on your kid which increases meaningful learning. Being relaxed in a familiar environment makes it easier to connect and build rapport between your kid and their physiotherapist, thus, maximising the benefits from therapy sessions.

  • The exercises and equipment can be personalised to the home environment to suit your kid and family's needs. By observing your kid in their natural environment, the therapist will be able to gain an accurate picture of their skills. This allows the therapist to come up with appropriate and specific exercises to target areas where you kid requires assistance in. Exercises can be integrated into your kid's typical routine and schedule. This allows for skills to be targeted in the environment in which they are most likely to occur.

  • Parent / caregiver coaching is more effective, as the home environment and equipment used is exactly what the parents will use when they help their kid with their exercises.

  • It is convenient for kids and their families, as it eliminates the need to travel. This is useful for families who have difficulties in making trips to therapy centres.

Intensive Physiotherapy Sessions

Occasionally, more intensive physiotherapy sessions may be required for a length of time. For example, after botox injections, or after surgery, including post-SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy) or SEMLS (Single Event Multi Level Surgery for orthopaedic conditions).

Please reach out to us in advance, so that we can plan the schedule for the sessions. We want to work closely with the medical team and the inpatient physiotherapy team, whether in Singapore or overseas, to help make the transition from hospital to your home as seamless as possible for your child.

In order to reach out to kids and their families who are not able to have face-to-face physiotherapy sessions, Janell has started online video Physiotherapy services (Tele-Rehab). Please click on Tele-Rehab to find out more, or contact us via the contact form below.
